History of porn from ancient times

First of all, what is porn? That term has been thrown around so many times, but did most of us stop and think what the word actually means? Go ahead and enter this word in Google. The definition of it is 10th in the Google rankings and it states that it is a written description or illustration of prostitutes or prostitution. Basically an immoral act of selling one’s body and recording it in some way. Also, porn is not meant to have any artistic value, besides the intent to sexually arouse. That is porn.

As the years have passed, so has the “porn” evolved. We have stone engravings that date back as 30,000 years ago that are depicting large breasted and pregnant women. This was probably not intended to arouse, but to show fertility and to be used as an icon. The real smut came in the 1600’s, with the “dirty” Frenchies. But the actual erotic novel was not printed until the 1748 and it was called “Fanny Hill” (Oxford University Press). For the time, it covered some really interesting topics such as bisexuality, masochism, group sex, orgies and voyeurism. Also by 1888, the anonymous author of “My Secret Life” was writing about sex with descriptions that might be considered a bit too much even by today’s standards.

The real start of pornography can be dated back to 1839

The real start of pornography can be dated back to 1839, when Louis Daguerre invented the daguerreotype, and it was a very primitive form of photography. All of a sudden, as with every new technology that was meant to help people, we used it in some other way, that just might not be considered “helpful” towards civilization, but rather fun. The use of this technology for porn was described as “a rather solemn man gingerly inserting his penis into the vagina of an equally solemn and middle-aged woman”.

The real hardcore sex scenes started to emerge after the 1900’s. The so called “stag films” were usually shown at an all male attended gathering, and they were bland, almost if you can imagine your grandparents having sex. But it was real human intercourse, and it was fascinating.

For a long time porn stagnated. There were no new developments in porn.

The times were such that a public gathering to watch porn films was not all too welcoming. Sure, there were always the outlaws, that charged a pretty penny to make, and secretly show these kinds of movies, but it was all pretty simple, with no real “smut”. Then the 70’s came and all turned around. The hippies brought a new liberating vibe, women wanted to be “free” of the shackles of the society – so porn got its brake that it waited for so long. Some consider the 70’s as the beginning stages of porn and then the golden age followed.

Those were the days, when porn was premiered in cinemas and it used real cinematographic films. There was a desire to view these kinds of images, but the cinemas were usually frequented by men. Women still didn’t feel comfortable as much, to go in public and watch a stag film. The taboos were still strong and admitting to watching porn meant that something perverted was going on with you.

Once the Internet came, the downloads offered the insight into peoples dirtiest desires. Some of the statistic suggested that people are more prone to curiosity in filmed sexuality, than in real life, since some of the films that were downloaded were out there. Once the data was sorted, it was shown that 48 percent of downloads were not of the ordinary, depicting incest, pedophilia and even bestiality. Under 5 percent of the downloads was regular man/female intercourse.

All of these statistics suggest that Internet porn has brought something new for the psychologists to analyse and the results should be very interesting. The very fact that one can go on the net and search whatever he wants to see, in a sexual way must breed curiosity. And that’s all good. But also, as some scientists claim, porn can be addictive. Also, the distorted way of sex that is usually portrayed in porn, sooner or later catches up to humans who indulge in too much porn. What the new age of porn has brought to us is the need for responsible usage of it.

When we look at the evolution of porn, one might argue that it is a constant revelation about human sexuality. With free use of porn and the possibility to see whatever pops into ones mind, the boundaries are nowhere in sight. The desensitizing of our senses pushes us to go a step further and reach that hit that’s gonna get us that high that we are searching for. All in all, porn says more about us as a breed than we actually imagined.
