Russia blocks porn site Brazzers

As the saying goes “You can’t please everyone”, therefore the governments are taking advantage of the situations that are concerning the development of its youth. This time it is Russia that is taking this advantage. Or is it? It is a double edged sword that their Roskomnadzor has been doing recently but it is a story that is worth to be placed in the world news, so that at least a debate can be started, since their decision on banning Brazzers will not be overturned any time soon.

As we all know, or at least some of us, Brazzers is a leading porn site from Canada that many users are flocking to, to get their dose of porn when they have the “urge”. And sure, it is all fun and games as it should be, in all of the countries that has free media and governments that are not meddling their hands with what Internet has to offer to their nation. It is a very thin line between fascism and democracy when the content of the Internet is being selected by your very own government.

Brazzers is damaging to the human psyche and that it has a negative impact

It is reported that Roskomnadzor announced that Brazzers is damaging to the human psyche and that it has a negative impact on their youth and that it violated citizensí rights. This can be placed under the looking glass since some of the arguments are valid, but it just might be the way that they are doing it that is causing people to turn their heads away from the moral of the decision, the Russian government shoved down their peoples’ throats.

This is not the first time Russian Roskomnadzor made a decision to ban a porn site. Back in September of 2015 it was YouPorn and shortly after PornHub who were banned by the request of the courts. It was said that it is better for the Russians to go out and meet each other in real life, rather than spend their days or their leisure time before a porn site. The argument is a valid one, since this is something that our grandfathers would say this to us, and it makes perfect sense. The issue lies within the right of the government to dictate their decisions on such a mundane thing.

There are very few who didn’t check out any porn site or those that are not tempted by the thought of checking one out. The reason porn sites exist is not that the sites are making money and that these people want to do such things before a camera, it is that there is a demand for such explicit material to be seen and consumed in ones free time. It is the freedom to do so that has been stripped away from Russians’ citizens and it is a great way to watch and see what the aftermath could be.

On the flip side, the argument that it is “bad for the youth”, holds the truth even with the medical community, since some psychologists are opponents of the pornographic material and its contents being distributed to the “still undeveloped minds of the youth”. There are some evidence that watching porn increases the levels of serotonin, that it might, and the word might is emphasized, cause some deviations from healthy expectations in bed, that it promotes objectification of women, that it makes the act of sex seem more animalistic than it should, so on and so forth, but this is all just insubstantial evidence. The issue still lies in the use of power and the way of handling it, within a country that has history of stern behavior.

After YouPorn and PornHub were banned, a Twitter war broke out that was on the verge to become a full blown circus, since the back and forth correspondence between the Roskomnadzor and the Twitter users, to say the least was hilarious. When Roscomnadzor was asked why they couldn’t come up with something new, their reply was: “Can you enter the same river twice?”. Furthermore this elicited a reply from a user who stated that he actually did follow their suggestion of entering twice, and as a result he is getting married now.

The back and forth Tweeting seemed like a one-sided game since it didn’t seem as if the ruling would be overturned. So at this present moment the above mentioned sites are banned in Russia. The question that is now raised is what other sites will be banned, will they be banned, and why them. Since the whole point of the Internet was the freedom to do whatever one feels like in the realms of common sense. Watching porn is one of them. Domino effect is a dangerous path to follow, so this case might be a lesson for the future to come and it’s a great case-study.
